Paper making!

Hello blogging world! On 25th the November our school is having a Gala Day, all of the classes made sustainable products to sell on the day. We thought about having those products because lots of plastic and rubbish is around New Zealand, so we had to think of ways to stop that. Room Hauraki made tote bags, Waitemata made soap and we made recycled paper. If you don't know what sustainability meaning is, it is when you can keep using it, so you don't waste anything. Recycled paper is environment friendly because you don't have to cut downs trees to make paper because you can just use scraps of paper. We also made Christmas cards and birthday cards. Here a photo of some cards.

If you are wondering what the materials are they are:
  • Mould/Deckle/Screen
  • Bucket
  • Hot water
  • Potato masher/egg beater
  • Tray
  • Siccors
  • Scraps of used paper
  • Big box
  • Cloth

  1. Firstly you need to rip or cut the scraps of used paper into a bucket.
  2. After you have ripped it in a bucket you soak it in hot water overnight, just so that the paper is easier to turn into pulp.
  3. Once it is the next day you get the bucket and stir it until it is like porridge. Once it is porridge/pulp you pour it in a big tray and then get another bucket of cold water in the tray.
  4. Connect your deckle and mould together so it is like a puzzle piece. Drag the deckle and mould down the tray and shake it around so that you get pulp in your deckle.
  5. After that on a big box that is facing downwards then you place a cloth on the box, then drain your water out of your deckle and take the top part of the deckle off. Then flip the whole deckle on the cloth.
  6. After that take the other part of the deckle off, and get a new cloth and place it on top of the paper and smooth it out, so that the paper won't be too wet. Then take the screen off the paper which is grey.
  7. Lastly you ask a buddy to take the other side of the cloth down to dry it.
Overall making paper was really fun and I would like to make paper again. From making paper I learnt what a deckle was and different ways to make paper. It was hard to stir the paper into pulp because we had to use our hands to stir, and we would always get exhausted. It was easy to rip the paper because you can just roughly rip it. I hope you like this blog post and would like to make paper too. Please feel free to comment on my blog. Bye! Bye! Blogging world!
