A Call to Arms - Activity 2

Hello Blogging world! In WWII over 140,000 New Zealanders went overseas to help in the war. Many were sent to fight huge battles, including the Atlantic that lasted over 5 years! The Atlantic battle came to a end in 1943, In total of 22 New Zealanders have been awarded the VCs, because of bravery.A VC is short for Victoria Cross. We had to find 1 of the VCs winners in the WWII, and tell everyone about him and what he did to earn the VC. I chose Keith Elliott.

Keith Elliott is a man from Egypt. He got awarded the VC just because his effort at Ruweisat Ridge on 15 July 1942. Serving with 22nd Battalion, Elliot got badly wounded on his chest from a heavy machine gun. For his bravery we will all be thankful.

From making this blog post I learnt what a VC is and how you can earn it. I hope you have also learnt what a VC is if you haven't and now know a little bit more about a VC WWII winner. I hope you have enjoyed this blog post! Please feel free to leave a comment! Bye! Bye! Blogging world!

  1. Good morning Amie!

My name is Rachel Williams and I am working with Megan, Clare and Cia on the Summer Learning Journey programme this year. Wow! You have been incredibly active over the past two weeks. Awesome work.

I particularly enjoyed reading your post from this morning about Keith Elliott. It sounds like he was a very brave man who did all that he could to save the lives of his fellow soldiers at Ruweisat Ridge. I hadn't heard much about this particular battle until I read your post. If you're interested in learning more about the battle, please feel free to check out this site: http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-GreLong-t1-body-d5.html

It is a webpage that has been designed by a team of historians at the University of Victoria in Wellington and it outlines all of the key events that took place during WWII.

Thanks again for introducing us to Mr Elliott and for telling us more about the Victoria's Cross medal. I hope that you will continue to learn, create and share your great blogs posts with us over the coming weeks.

    All the best!
    Rachel :)

I quite enjoyed the webpage that you shared with me. Now I know more about the battle he was in. The VC medal sounds pretty hard to earn. Thanks for the comment!
